(Mashantucket, Conn.): The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation (MPTN) announces the retirement of Fire Chief Floyd L. Chaney after more than 51 years in fire and emergency services, including seven years leading the Mashantucket Pequot Fire Department (MPFD). Chief Chaney will officially retire on May 2, 2025.
The Mashantucket Pequot Fire Department provides fire protection, prevention, suppression, and rescue services for the Tribal Nation and its enterprises, including Foxwoods Resort Casino. The department also provides mutual aid to surrounding communities, enhancing regional safety and collaboration.
As the Tribe’s Emergency Manager and Fire Marshal, Chief Chaney has been instrumental in developing and executing an Emergency Management Plan for a wide range of scenarios across the Mashantucket Pequot Gaming Enterprise, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Tanger Outlets at Foxwoods.
“After more than 51 years in fire and emergency management, the time has come for me to retire,” said Chief Chaney. “It has been an incredible journey, and I’m proud of all we’ve achieved over the years. As I step into retirement, I am grateful for the experiences, the relationships built, and the trust placed in me. I will forever cherish my time with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and remain committed to supporting public safety in any way I can.”

Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation Treasurer, Merrill Reels, who serves as Chairman of the Tribe’s Public Safety Committee, added, “Chief Chaney’s unwavering commitment to public safety has left a lasting impact on our community. In his role, he worked hand-in-hand with the Public Safety Committee to ensure that the well-being of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation remained at the forefront of every decision. His leadership has strengthened our fire and emergency services and elevated the standards of care and response for our people. As he enters retirement, we extend our deepest gratitude and heartfelt wishes for continued success and fulfillment in the next chapter of his journey.”
Under Chief Chaney’s leadership, the Mashantucket Fire Department secured significant grants from Homeland Security for new turnout gear and specialized training in confined space, elevator, and rope rescue. To ensure the department’s preparedness, Chief Chaney also prioritized continuing education for firefighters in all areas of emergency response.
The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation extends its deepest gratitude to Chief Chaney for his years of dedicated service and wishes him a fulfilling retirement.
