WHAT:
The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation marks the 20th year of its Driving Out Diabetes Golf Tournament, an event dedicated to fighting one of the most pressing health challenges in Native communities.

  • Approximately 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes each year.
  • Native Americans are two to three times more likely than non-Hispanic White Americans to have diabetes.
  • Two out of three Native people with kidney failure cite diabetes as the cause.
  • Event proceeds support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), American Diabetes Association (ADA), and Joslin Diabetes Center, as well as various Tribal community health initiatives, including healthy meals for elders, youth fitness programs, and diabetes prevention education.
