The power to tax is a foundation of sovereignty by which a government ensures public safety, provides health and human services, and promotes economic development. A long-ago, misguided court case subjects vendors operating on reservation lands to unjust personal property taxation despite the fact that all services (police, fire, etc) are provided by Mashantucket and not an adjacent community.
It is time to put an end to the inequitable taxation of tribal lands and treat tribal nations appropriately as sovereign governments. We urge you to support HB 5467 and correct the injustices of the past, honor the present, and allow tribes to invest in the future. Kutuputush (thank you).
